getting    children  access   to   books

Picture
End Book Deserts advocates for children in high-poverty areas who lack basic access to age-appropriate books, high-quality reading materials, and book culture. By highlighting the work of innovative organizations and grassroots efforts, we raise awareness about the implications of limited literacy resources on children’s reading development.
Through advocacy, fundraising, and author outreach, we strive to eradicate book deserts, get the right book into the hands of the right reader, and promote lifelong reading for all children.

We believe that education is the best path out of poverty for kids in need. But access to quality education is far from equal. Significant barriers stand in the way for kids in low-income communities, including scarce books and learning materials and a lack of diversity in the books that do reach them. Even their most basic needs go unmet. First Book’s mission is to remove these barriers so every child has the chance to learn. [This site is interesting because you can click on the interactive map to see stories of those who are trying to get books into children’s hands.]

Getting Books in Their Hands from a Distance: It Takes a Vision & a Village: Blog of “how to” get books into children’s hands who are NOT in physical school buildings:
This is the account of how a fifth grade teacher in California gave fifth graders’ choices about books, gave book talks on the books, gathered the information to determine book choices, and then delivered to families (and the school building is currently closed).
